California Walnut Commission
www.walnuts.org
The California Walnut Commission was established in 1987 and today represents nearly 4,600 growers and 64 handlers (processors). The Commission is an agency of the State of California that works in concurrence with the Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). California walnuts account for 99% of the commercial U.S. supply and two-thirds of world trade. The California Walnut Commission is mainly involved in health research, domestic health communication and export market development activities.
Walnuts are one of the few whole foods that contribute many beneficial nutrients to the diet. For example, walnuts are a source of good polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) which includes essential alpha linolenic acid (ALA), the plant form of omega-3 fatty acids. One serving of walnuts is an excellent source of ALA, containing 2.5 grams per ounce. Walnuts also contain many antioxidants, ranking second to blackberries. To date, clinical research has been conducted in the areas of: heart health, diabetes, cognitive function, cancer and bone health. In fact, walnuts received the first qualified health claim for a whole food in 2004: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 ounces of walnuts per day, as part of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet, and not resulting in increased caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” Information on walnuts' health benefits, delicious recipes and more can be found at www.walnuts.org

American Institute for Cancer Research
www.aicr.org
The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) is the cancer charity that funds research on the relationship of nutrition, physical activity and weight management to cancer risk, interprets the scientific literature and educates the public about the results.
AICR was the first cancer charity to create awareness of the relationship between diet and cancer risk; to focus funding on the role of diet, physical activity and weight in cancer prevention and survival; and to synthesize the global research into an empowering, practical message: About one-third of the most common cancers could be prevented via healthy diet, regular physical activity and weight management. AICR has published two landmark reports that interpret the accumulated research in the field, and is committed to a process of continuous review. AICR also provides a wide range of educational programs to help millions of Americans learn to make dietary changes for lower cancer risk. Its award-winning New American Plate program is presented in brochures, seminars and on its website, www.aicr.org. AICR is a member of the World Cancer Research Fund International.

Vision: Getting Americans to Take Charge of Their Health
Mission: Making America’s Students & Citizens Agents of Change
HealthCorps® (www.healthcorps.org), a proactive health movement founded by heart surgeon and nationally syndicated talk show host, Dr. Mehmet Oz, is fighting the obesity and mental resilience crises by getting American students and communities across the country to become agents of change and take charge of their health. HealthCorps is helping the country reach the tipping point towards wellness now and for the future of our children.
Like a Peace Corps for Health, engages recent college graduates who defer entry into medical school or graduate health programs to participate in public service through a two-year full time assignment at a designated public high school. The national health educational and peer mentoring program is up and running in 50 high schools in nine states (AZ, CA, FL, MS, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX) with future plans to implement the initiative in all fifty states in the next decade. This year the program will impact 25,000 students and 50,000 community members.
Focused on three priorities, HealthCorps educates the student body, achieves community outreach through “FitTown” – an initiative to connect and empower citizens and organizations to bring about awareness and affect change through local projects and initiatives; and advocates for policy shifts across all levels of government that put health and physical education back into the core curriculum of the American education system.
